A star-studded ceremony on April 1st revealed the groups for this year’s World Cup in Qatar, even as three teams, including the Americans’ third opponent, still have to qualify.

Louis van Gaal said it all with just the hint of a playful smile. The Netherlands’ draw for the World Cup was not easy, he said, with his characteristic bluntness, and nor was it lucky. It was, instead, “colorful.” That was a better word. Ecuador’s sunshine yellow, Qatar’s rich maroon, Senegal’s deep green and that blazing Dutch orange: colorful.

He tried, as best he could, to hide his delight. He knew, after all, that the dice had fallen for him, and for his team, just as he had predicted — in graphic and not entirely serious terms — that it would. Everyone wanted to draw Qatar, the host and by a gulf the gentlest prospect of the top seeds. Only his team had been chosen.

But Van Gaal is too long in the tooth to be fooled. He knows, too, that World Cup draws are not just bombastic and saccharine and filled with time-wasting and content-filling and Idris Elba; they are chimerical, too. They have an oracular quality. Often, they do not mean what they seem to mean at first reading.

Consider Spain and Germany, for example, drawn together early on in Group E. Their encounter will mark the end of the tournament’s first week; it is the only time two of the anticipated contenders to win the competition, to be crowned world champion, will meet in the opening phase. Both seemed to have drawn the short straw.

And then the balls kept on rolling and the names kept on coming and it turned out that both had, in fact, landed on their feet. Japan will be no pushover, and whichever of Costa Rica or New Zealand fills out the group will hardly be content to go quietly. But none have the resources or the quality or the pedigree of Spain and Germany, and both will be confident of making it through.

Or look at England, which managed to make the semifinals in 2018 — and the final of last summer’s European Championship — by virtue of winning knockout games, in regulation time, against Sweden, a pale Germany and Ukraine.

Its good fortune seemed to have held, drawn with Iran, the United States and one of Scotland, Wales and Ukraine, a group far richer in geopolitical intrigue than it is in elite quality.

“I prefer putting balls in the net than flowers,” said Dragan Skocic, Iran’s Serbian coach, when asked about meeting the Americans, a reference to the two nations’ exchanging bouquets when they met at the 1998 tournament. “Football transcends the political stuff,” said his American counterpart, Gregg Berhalter.

WC Draw

But the group stage draw is not really a draw just for the group stage: It is a road map for the entire tournament, too. If England is to win — as it believes it can, this time, with rather more logic than that of the stopped clock — the incline grows immediately steeper once the knockout stage starts. Senegal, the most complete team Africa has sent to a tournament for more than a decade, may lie in wait in the last 16. Then it could be France, the reigning champion, in the quarterfinals. Whatever lies beyond that may not be immediately relevant.

There will, of course, be some teams who are pleased with their fates: France, certainly, should have little trouble with Denmark and Tunisia and one of Peru, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. The two South American contenders, Brazil and Argentina, will be confident, too.

Even the United States should not be too displeased. “We have the youngest squad at the World Cup,” Berhalter said. “For us, that’s a benefit. The guys are fearless.” England might be comfortable favorites to win their group, but there is no reason to believe the United States — returning after an eight-year absence — cannot finish second.

And there will, of course, be teams who are left to rue their lot. Canada, for example, gracing this stage for the first time since 1986, has a group without a true heavyweight but somehow harder for it: Croatia and Belgium finished second and third four years ago, while Morocco sailed through the arduous process of African qualifying.

Ultimately, though, Van Gaal was right: There is no way of knowing, eight months in advance, who has been lucky and who has not, of which is the smooth draw and which the rough. After all the pomp and the circumstance, the video montages and the marketing spiel dressed up as mission statements, all you can say with any certainty is that it will, when it comes, be colorfu

How do you learn basic soccer technique?

While anyone can kick a ball and start playing soccer, one needs to know the technique to play and enjoy the game.

Techniques of running the ball, receiving the ball, passing the ball, kicking – all these things require constant training and practices. Of course, there is no limit to perfection, but the question arises, how to learn the basic soccer technique? Start with the simplest and gradually complicate and improve the quality of performance of a particular technical element. A lot of repetition and effort is the key to a positive result.

Remember that soccer training always starts with getting to know the ball. And almost all exercises are performed with it to improve the feel of the ball. When the ball is near you, you control it. And this means that you control the game. Soccer technique develops with constant contact with the ball.

Where to start learning?

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Someone has speed but lacks strength. Someone has a good eye, and someone can think fast. If you add these and some other specialized skills together, you will have an ideal player. But in this sport, it is not necessary to start with the improvement of weaknesses, and not even with the identification of athletic strengths. All of this will happen in the course of training.

The first basic task of the novice soccer player is to make friends with the ball! You need to find a comfortable open area, buy the right soccer ball and play with it. Kick it, drive it, juggle it. And you can do it with all parts of your body. It makes no difference! You need to feel the ball, understand its capabilities, be able to “cooperate” with it, do not be afraid of the ball. Training begins with getting acquainted with the ball. Any good coach will tell you this. So free play with the ball, preferably in the open air – that’s where you need to start.

How to master basic soccer techniques

It’s great to play soccer with speed, understanding of the game, and strength. But it’s even better when you’re also skilled at the game! Learning a player includes the development of technical skills. You have to start with the basics. Before you learn to play soccer well, you have to do a lot of routine training on practicing passing (receiving, passing), dribbling the ball, and striking. Some may think it’s not that exciting and even boring, but without a solid base, you can’t go any further.

To learn a basic technique, you must regularly practice simple basic skills. There is a list of simple, but very effective exercises that will help put a solid technical base in place for the novice player. No one will tell you how to properly play soccer without technical skills. So start by practicing these exercises.

SIX Fundamental skills required to play soccer

Below we have summarized 6 basic skill that are vital to know if you want to play soccer.

1. Passing

This has to be the most important soccer skill you need to know. The simple truth here is that if you don’t know how to pass the ball, then you really don’t know how to play soccer.

There’s no other way to say it. You may only need a few minutes to learn how to pass a ball, but to really become great you need hours of practice!

2. Receiving a Ball

This is probably the second most important thing in soccer, after passing a ball. If you don’t know how to receive a ball, you don’t know how to play soccer.

Every time you receive a pass from a teammate you need to know what to do with the ball. If it takes you 5 minutes to get control on it then you can be pretty sure that your teammates will not either pass the ball so often to you.

3. Trapping

This is the third important skill you need to know as soccer player. However, trapping a ball is not the same as receiving it.

When receiving a ball you will generally be in movement and when trapping a ball you will often stand still.

4. dribbling

Dribbling the ball is an important skill for soccer players to develop. It is necessary to find a spacious area and practice dribbling with and without obstacles. The ball needs to be pushed forward in small pushes. It must go away from the foot not more than 30-60 cm forward. At first, drive the ball in a straight line. Then gradually try to change the trajectory.

It can take time to adjust and learn to be confident dribbling without looking at the ball all the time – but it’s worth it. Kind of dribble the ball blindly, looking at the field.

5. Shooting

If you want to score goals then you will also need to know how to shoot. If don’t, then scoring a goal will be pretty hard.

However, shooting is not just about hitting the ball with enormous power. You have to be able to hit the goal properly – precision has to be in the equation, which is the 6th skill you need to master.

6. Precision

We mentioned earlier, passing the ball is the most important skill you need to know. But what about precision?

I mean, if your passes never find the right address then what is the point of passing the ball when you really think about it?

The necessary skills to play soccer well

How can you learn to play soccer without developing basic skills? You can’t! To play soccer, you need to have several of certain qualities. Of course, all of them can’t be equally well developed in one person.

A future soccer player needs these skills:

  • Speed
  • Coordination
  • Reaction speed
  • Physical strength
  • The ability to see the field
  • Fast decision making

Soccer is a smart sports game. It involves more than just your feet, as many people mistakenly believe. It is not enough to know the rules of soccer and know how to kick a ball. During the game, you should be able to read your opponent, make quick decisions, take control of the ball, pass it to another player from your team or complete the moment on your own. And all of this is done at full speed, within the allotted minutes. Of course, all of this is very difficult. But, with a lot of desire and with at least a couple of basic skills, it’s not impossible!

]]>

It all started somewhere back in the late eighties when some Bangladeshi students from UT Austin decided to play soccer at least once or twice a week amid their busy schedules. They were all young kids then and relatively new in the country and chose soccer to create a sense of community as soccer helped them to bring everyone together. As you all know, back then, there was no internet, and it was not easy to make phone calls back home. There were no iPhone, no WhatsApp, no Viber or FB. The students formed a team and called it Team BSA (Bangladesh Students Association). They participated at UT’s Intramural Sports, which had a soccer league then. Some notable first Team players’ were Syed Rahman Rana, Abu Sayed, Mostafiz Rahman Mithu, Hasan Taufique Sohel, Ashif Mahmud Rubel, Khoshru, Tony and others. They used to play at UT’s IF (Intramural Fields) near 45th street.

After they graduated, they continued playing regularly and choose a field in Austin’s Far West area to play soccer from 1994. By that time, many new students and professionals moved to Austin. They mostly played during weekdays, once or twice a week. During 1994’s World Cup time, many of them gathered to watch the game at Quamrul Mina’s place, who himself was a soccer player then. It was right after the final game (between Brazil and Italy) of the World Cup, some of them decided to organize a match between Austin’s (Bangladeshi) Brazil’s Supporters vs Italy’s Supporters. That’s when the idea of getting blue and yellow jerseys first came up. Even now when we ask folks to join for Sunday soccer, we ask them to bring either blue or yellow jerseys to divide the players between the teams by their jersey color.

It was back in June 1997 when the first Austin BD Soccer Tournament took place, hosted by the Bangladesh Students Association (BSA) of UT Austin. It had wide participation by the Bangladeshi Community in all of Austin. Five soccer teams participated in the tournament and the festivity surrounding it and the tournament quality indeed made it a very enjoyable and successful event. The team named Sreshto, managed by Quamrul Mina, won the championship. A total of 55 players participated in that tournament. Each team were owned by two women and a coach-manager was assigned to each team. The tournament was sponsored by Tokyo Autos and Pragma Systems, two business based in Austin. All the games took place at sprawling UT Intramural soccer fields.

Drafting of the players and the way teams were formed was quite interesting. Each team were allocated ten thousand points and they had to use these points judiciously to select the players who were ranked in eleven groups of five players in each level. A minimum of 500 points had to be spent for a player. So, if a team bought a star player with lots of points, they will have fewer points to pick players from other level. Highest bidder for a player got the player. This drafting rule made the teams generally of equal strength.

All the teams participated in that tournament did it with good spirit and sportsmanship. The organizing committee members were Rana, Rubel, Faisal and Zia-Nasser. It was a very well organized tournament and it opened the door for future tournaments in soccer and in other sports.

Some of the prominent players of Austin BD Soccer during 90s era were Abid, Simon, Hero jr, Tuhin, Rubel, Rana, Faisal, Sohel, Saiful Islam, Nasim Uddin, Jami, Hero sr. During that Austin BD team started playing matches against Houston BD and Dallas BD teams.

Austin BD Soccer has been around for a long time, and it will continue to stay for a lot longer. The growth that Austin’s BD community have seen in recent years is phenomenal. Some of the senior players (from 90s era) are still playing, while some joins during the tournament to manage/coach teams. We have a long road ahead of us, but the passion of the players, former players and friends are quite remarkable. The soccer in Austin have gained lots of support from the community and it can do great things to make Austin BD soccer even more successful.

The best age for kids to start playing soccer is between the ages of 3 and 5 years old. Introducing soccer to kids in this age group can help develop their basic soccer skills at a young age while gaining a general interest in the game.

It is important to note that each child is different and although this age group may suit some kids, this is just a guide, so it’s worth considering the right age group based on when parents believe their own child is ready.

Actually, some kids may benefit from being introduced into the sport at an older age (between 6 to 9 years old), as their coordination is better and have a greater attention span.

Regardless of the child’s age, getting kids involved in soccer provides a great opportunity for parents to promote a healthy lifestyle, by introducing exercise to their kids and all the while having fun playing soccer at the same time. This may be as simple as having a kick around either at home in the backyard or at the local park.

Alternatively, there are a variety of soccer classes and academies available for parents to enroll their children and introduce them to soccer with kids their own age.

How to get your child started in soccer?

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It is played in every continent around the world and chances are that you won’t have to look too far to find a soccer venue nearby that can assist with teaching your child the basics of soccer and developing their soccer skills.

Parents can also easily introduce soccer to their kids at home and teach them basic soccer skills, without having to enroll them in a soccer class. This is great for parents wanting to get involved in playing soccer games with their kids, participating together, and developing their child’s skills and interest in the game.

Over the last couple of years, millions of sports lovers from different parts of the world have pitched their tents of loyalty with different sports teams. Football and soccer are the two most competitive sports that are placed one over the other. The fact that football is popular doesn’t make it the best sport. That is why we present to you this article to reveal some of the reasons why soccer is alternative to football – and indeed, the best sport in the world.

Soccer Has Fluid Play

Playing sports of any kind requires an eye for details so you can make the most out of every situation. That is one reason why soccer is one of the best sports in the world. The fluidity of the game means that there will be little or no occasional stops and distractions during the gameplay. Instead, both the clock/timing and the ball are in motion at all times. If for any reason the ball goes out of play, it will be put right back to play the next minute.

Less Exposure to Injury

Unlike football where injuries are sustainable, soccer doesn’t overly expose the players to injuries. The less likelihood of getting injured during a soccer game is because of the extra care taken during the team formation. When the injury rate is low, you can rest assured that more athletes will have a longer, healthier career.

Soccer doesn't require much equipment

Soccer players don’t need to break a bank to afford the equipment they need for the game. That is because of the inexpensiveness of this type of sports. The inexpensiveness of soccer is partly because of the few items athletes need and mainly because those items are affordable. For example, a ball and soccer cleats are the most important items to get for the sports. On the player’s part, they only need shin guards, jerseys, and shorts to play comfortably.

Soccer is popular

Despite the proliferation of football games, such as the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and English Premier League; it doesn’t change the fact that soccer is popular. It will interest you to know that soccer is considered one of the most popular sports in the world because of the 265 million players that play the game.

Rules are not complicated

Players already have a lot of things to worry about. From tackling other players to regain the ball to watching their goalpost and preventing shots targeted to create a goal – players have a lot to think of. So, it doesn’t make sense to overburden them by creating and implementing additional rules that would work them up. That is why we believe that soccer is a better sport because the rules aren’t complicated. The primary rules are to keep to the offside rule and never use your hands when playing.

Speed is an essential component of any sport. However, it’s a bit more critical to learn how to run faster in soccer. Soccer players must maintain their momentum as they run the field for an entire game. As you train, you should take steps to include drills that are designed to help you run faster in soccer.

When we talk about speed drills for soccer, we are discussing more than just running fast. While running fast is essential, the ability to run at full pace for an entire game is what truly matters.

We’ve compiled a few tips designed to help you run faster and increase your speed in soccer. Take your game to the next level and improve your speed on the field.

How to Run Faster in Soccer with the Ball

Running in soccer goes beyond simply maintaining the endurance of running up and down the soccer field. Soccer players need to be able to dribble the ball, control the ball, pass the ball, and keep the ball away from their opponents. All while maintaining their speed and endurance during the game.

Some of the world’s best soccer players are not the fastest athletes. Rather, they are the players who get the most out of their speed. The best soccer players use their speed to move quickly with the ball, maintaining a rhythm to throw off the defenses of the opposing team.

How to Run Faster in Soccer without the Ball

The need for speed for offensive soccer players is obvious. Offensive soccer players need to sharpen their off-ball movement skills and speed to separate themselves from various defensive players. For example, a winger needs to get past both the fullback on his/her side and the center backs. Without explosive speed, defenders can sit back and relax without worrying about players ever zooming past them.

Defensive players must run faster in soccer to prevent other offensive players from making plays past them. The easiest way for teams to score is to slide through with the ball to wingers and strikers trying to get past the back line. Defenders must have the speed to catch up with them quickly.

Speed Endurance Drills to Improve Your Soccer Speed

Running faster in soccer doesn’t matter if you’re not able to maintain your speed for the entire game. For example, if you receive the ball at midfield and break away from the defense with an explosive sprint, it won’t matter if you run out of gas 10 yards later. You need to work on your endurance until you can stick to your maximum speed from start to finish.

If you want to run faster in soccer, you must start by increasing your strength. Increased speed is just one of the benefits of strength training. In fact, researchers have proven that strength training directly correlates with becoming a more agile and nimble runner; both which are highly compatible. Essentially, the stronger your body, the faster you will run.

Don’t Forget the Arm Techniques

What you do with your arms while you run matters. Ideally, you want your arms cocked at a 90-degree angle. As you run, be sure to drive your elbows back and forward. Take care not to straighten your arm on the way back. You want your arms moving forward and back, and not sideways. As you are running, your hands should be going through your hip. Pay attention that they are not high by your chest, or below your hips. Essentially, the faster your arms move, the faster your legs will go!

Adding these drills to your weekly training sessions will help to rapidly increase acceleration and velocity leading to enhanced vertical jump performance, increased speed, and elevated endurance. With a little push by yourself, you can start to train smarter, not harder!
